"THE NEW PRIESTHOOD"

The greatest contrast between the Old Covenant (Old Testament) and the New Covenant (New Testament) is that under the Law of Moses, (which was for that dispensation) the privilege of serving in the priesthood or ministry was limited to Aaron’s descendants. Exodus 27:21; 28:1; Numbers 17:3,8; 18:2,21; Deuteronomy 10:8-9; and 18:1. Other Israelites knew they would never have the privilege to serve in the priesthood or ministry. The priesthood or ministry of all believers, however, characterizes the New Covenant. I Peter 2:9 the chosen generation; All believers enjoy the privilege of serving God in the holy things.

God chooses spiritual Leaders for the purpose of the gospel’s ministry. (See Hebrews 5:4) they are selected for service and not only to rule over God's people (Hebrews 5:1), and that they interceded for mankind.

Most that enter the ministry today are not qualified on the basis of their lineage or ancestry, but it is still according to the call of God. Under the law, God chose the lineage of Levi and Aaron, but today God chooses the individual, regardless of his lineage.

Taken from the people:
One qualification of the high priest or minister was that they were “taken from among the people.” He had to have a relationship with the people he was to ministers too in every way. This priest could represent only those with whom he stood in complete unity of purpose.

The purpose of the priesthood:
Hebrews 5:2-3 taken from in the NKJV: That the priest; “Would have compassion on those who are ignorant (not knowing the whole truth) and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness” he should not become uplifted. I use this version (NKJV) to make my point. Since the high priest was in every way one of those whom he represented (subject to weakness of the flesh), he could be empathetic with them in their time of struggle. (See Hebrews 7:28)

God would not allow the priest to become “high-minded:”
Since the Levitical high priest himself was a sinner (in the flesh), he was required to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people whom he represented. (Hebrews 9:7) also (Leviticus 16:6-11).

Under the New Covenant there’s no more need for the identifiable earthly high priest: (The go to guy! The "spiritual veil" has been removed from the temple of our heart.)
Since Jesus Christ lives forever (Hebrews 7:16), His priesthood is permanent (Hebrews 7:23-24). The word translated “unchangeable” (Greek, aparabaton) means that the priesthood of Jesus Christ cannot be transmitted to another. Under the New Covenant, we have the ultimate and final High Priest whom is Jesus Christ. The priesthood of Jesus Christ was not based according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life (Hebrews 7:16 NKJV).

Today's priesthood is not governed under the Mosaic covenant:
The Priesthood today are a body of Believers, who are “a chosen generation;” a holy nation, a peculiar people. Under the Law of Moses, only the nation of Israel was chosen and holy. They were God’s peculiar people (See Deuteronomy 14:2; Psalm 135:4).  God chooses people on the basis of their faith in Christ Jesus (See John 6:37, Ephesians 2:11-22).
